Tso Moriri and Tso kar Salt Lake

In South east of Leh offers an incredible safari and rich for flaura and fauna. Chumathang Hot spring water may be useful for foreign national. Pasmina Goats – Morai plains with dusty trail and Tanglangla pass world third highest pass. Close to Tibet Border and restricted area.

The lake is at an altitude of 4,522 m. It is the largest of the high altitude lakes entirely within India and entirely within Ladakh. Tsomoriri Lake is about 26 km north to south in length and 3 to 5 km wide. The lake has no outlet at present and the water is brackish though not very perceptible to taste.

The lake is 20 to 50 kilometers southeast of the elevated valley of the core Rupshu Valley and falls within the greater Rupshu Plateau and valley area. The lake is ringed by hills rising over 6,000 m (20,000 ft). "Changpas", the nomadic migratory shepherds of yak, sheep, goat, and horses and who are engaged in trade and work on caravans in Ladakh region, are the main inhabitants of the area.

The Changthang Plateau in the eastern Ladakh represents a landscape of low productive ecosystems which protects unique floral and faunal species. The area is an extension of the western Tibetan plateau that lies above 4,500 m asl and supports diverse and low populations of several globally threatened mammals.

Best time to Visit

You can visit round the year in Tso Morir but in winters you may face heavy snow at the passes which may restrict your travel to this region.

May to November will be perfect time to visit though you may find the commercial accommodation available between May to end of September only.

How to reach

By Air : Leh is nearest airport which is just 240 kms away via Chumathang – Mahe bridge

By Surface : If you are travelling from Manali to Leh you have two options. Either take the route frommanali to Sarchu – Tso Kar Lake and further to Tsomorir Lake. While coming back to Leh you can follow the Tso Moriri – Mahe bridge – Leh route.

You have possibility to travel from Tsomoriri to Pangong directly via Nyoma – Chushul route – only for Indian National. Speicl Inner Line Permit needed.

If you are travelling from Srinagar to Leh you have to follow the same route Leh – Tso Moriri – Tanglangla – Leh.
